The war had put Marth's army through many trials, and they had traveled across most of the continent. Fortunately, a small castle had provided some respite for the weary army. The long campaign was still far from over. Caeda had decided not to think long on these facts, attempting to get some rest on this day. She strolled through the small castle garden, admiring the many different bushes and flowers littering the landscape. She sighed as her thoughts turned to Marth. Though she had joined his army to protect him, she hadn't had much chance to speak to him since leaving Talys. She had hoped to have some time with him today, but he had spent all of it so far in a war council. At least he was safe, she reminded herself. Every day brought a new battle, and more risk. Today she was rather bored. It was just after lunch, so she didn't have much to do. She was wearing her armor, just in case the castle was attacked, which was a bit less comfortable than more casual wear. It would be best to just try to relax, she told herself, and try to enjoy the scenery.
Lost in her thoughts, she found herself in a particularly colorful part of the garden. Roses of a wide variety of colors were arranged in neat rows. A smile spread across her face as she took in the view. The display was impressive at a distance, but she wanted a closer look. She particularly liked the blue colored petals, reminding her of Marth. Approaching the flowers, she saw that the shades of blue were subtly different. The princess wondered who had taken the time to painstakingly plant these roses in such a manner. She must find them later and thank them, she thought to herself. A gentle breeze ruffled the petals. Various scents filled the air. Caeda wondered if these roses smelt different from the flowers she knew. Curious, she leaned in towards one of the blue flowers, her hand also moving towards it. She could just about smell the flower, a wondrous scent...
"Ahh!" Caeda suddenly cried. She felt a sharp pain in her finger on her right hand. Instinctively, she quickly withdrew her hand. She must have brushed against a thorn she decided. Rubbing her finger, she thought it odd how it had hurt despite the gloves she was wearing. She crouched down to look underneath the flowers. She saw a particularly long, sharp, nasty looking thorn protruding from a purple rose. She should be more careful, she thought, deciding on a safer way to admire the flowers.
Caeda stood back up but something was amiss. Her breastplate was now hanging, off from her chest, as if ill-fitting. How odd, she thought, tightening the straps. This armor was custom made and she was sure it was on properly this morning, had it become loose somehow? She subconsciously scratched at her neck. Her finger touched the collar of her tunic. Was it always this high? She was sure it didn't normally reach her chin. Caeda tugged at her collar in confusion. Suddenly, her belt thumped to the ground, landing on the grass. Sighing in annoyance, she crouched down to retrieve her belt, only for her top to swell up with air. Now she was sure something was wrong. It was as if she was a child wearing their parent's clothes, she thought. She stood once more, clutching her discarded armor. She looked down over her body, startled to see her bare skin through her now open collar. She moved to grab her garment, only for her glove to go sailing off into the flowerbed. Her bare hand found her breastplate now level with her abdomen.
The princess was half-dressed and thoroughly confused. What on earth was happening to her? Was something making her clothing expand? She looked up only to find the roses inches from her face. She flinched, moving back, but her feet were now swimming in her boots. She slipped and fell over backwards, landing on her rear. She broke her fall with her hands, saving her from a nasty bash on the head but they were now deep within her sleeves. Bewildered, she looked up from the ground and saw a truly bewildering sight. Flowers and hedgerows stretched above her as she found herself in a world rich with plant life. Was she dreaming? She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then opened them once more. The plants were now even bigger. This finally made her realize the truth. She was wide awake, and she was shrinking!
Caeda gasped, looking back to her body. Her clothes were now like carpet, running towards the nearby flowerbed. Now aware of what was happening, she could feel herself sinking into the ground. She tried to stand but inelegantly fell down. Tension from her own over-sized collar had forced her to the ground. She shuffled backwards, freeing herself from her own former garments as though pulling a foot from a sock. She shivered as she felt the cold grass against her nude body. She stood and instinctively brought her arms to her body. She could only watch as she shrank yet smaller, surroundings expanding further. Fortunately for the petite princess the shrinking stopped soon after. Unfortunately it had left her a mere three inches tall.
The tiny woman regarded her surroundings with wonder, turning all the way round to see every inch of her new environment. She remembered herself, looking down to her clothing. At her new size, she could see all manner of small creases, tears and imperfections in her carefully sewn tunic that she couldn't see before. Spotting a small rip in the shoulder, she walked over and started carefully ripping the fabric. She could never have imagined she'd ever be small enough to need to walk across her own tunic, she thought as her skilled hands worked. It didn't take her long to free a small length of cloth, and to fashion it into a makeshift dress. Despite her impossible predicament it would be unbecoming to be caught in the nude, she told herself as she slipped on her new clothes. She fussed with the knot on her shoulder, it was fairly uncomfortable but it would have to do.
Her fashion sorted, Caeda surveyed her environment once more. What now? What could she possibly do at this size? And what had caused her to shrink down so small? Far above her, she spied the long thorn protruding from the purple rose. Was that the cause of her shrinking? She moved her hands to her hips, getting uncharacteristically cross as she regarded the nasty rose.
Caeda sighed. She certainly didn't expect to be shorter than a feather today. Certainly unprecedented, unless there existed some human-minimizing magic she had not heard of. Maybe the flower was magic? She shook her head, telling herself that this line of thinking wasn't helping. She had little chance of getting back to normal on her own. She should find someone who could help. Despite her situation, Caeda found herself thinking of her beloved once again. What would Marth think if he saw her smaller than a doll? Was she cuter when shrunken down to size like this? Marth would certainly protect her in this time of need. Perhaps he could keep her safe in his pocket?
The tiny princess heard a noise. Somewhat similar to one she was familiar with, but it made her much more nervous when she was missing most of her size. Turning, she was surprised to see...
