You were getting annoyed with all the extra work you had to do around the house, enough that you weren't paying close enough attention to the floor. As you unloaded the last of the laundry baskets, something sputtered in the machine followed by a dripping sound. You looked down at a strange dampness in your feet only to realize what had happened.
"Fuck," you said. "The machine must have broke. And now my socks are ruined."
Whatever, fixing the washing machine was something that went beyond your pay grade. You had done what your mother asked of you, she would have to figure out the machine for herself, with her limited technological skill already. You groaned and hoisted the basket of clean laundry away, ignoring the squashing sound your feet made whenever they walked before you took off your drenched socks and tossed them on top of the broken machine for later cleaning.
Your barefeet were cold as you continued upstairs with the laborious task of putting away all the clothes from the wash. You did everyone's rooms first until you ended up in your own, putting away your clothes in the dresser like a good, obedient boy. And as you came back to the bottom of the basket, you found one bit of clothing out of place.
"Whose socks are these?"
They didn't match anyone that you knew of your household, despite the fact that they looked girlish. Mom had a tendency for fuzzy socks, which these were not. Janet had preference for black and fashionable socks, while these were white and traditional. And Briana liked pink childish socks, while these looked meant for someone your age.
Your feet tapped against the cold wooden floor of your bedroom. The origin of the socks was a mystery you couldn't care to solve at the moment. Not when you were eager to go about reclaiming what remained of your Sunday afternoon, there were games to play and shows to veg out on. And your naked feet were like ice. You had the random thought to wear such socks to provide even the littlest warmth, not wanting to dig out your own socks after just putting them away.
