They are being watched

    by: Bikerider Author IconMail Icon
"Strange in what way?" Steven asked.
"I don't know how to explain it really," Laura said thoughtfully. "Have you ever had the feeling you're being watched?"
"You mean like the hair on the back of your neck stands on end? Like there is something pressed against your back that you can't see? Like when you just have an irrational feeling that can't be explained? Like when--"
"Stop it, will you, Steven?" Impatience filled Laura's voice.
"I'm just trying to lighten things up, Laura," Steven said. "You are becoming so tense."
"I need for you to take me seriously, Steven," Laura said. "Stop with the shtick, will you. It's getting dark, and if we don't get out of here soon who knows what will happen."
Steven looked at his sister with a softened gaze. "Okay, sis," he said. "I'm sorry." He put his hand on her shoulder. "Now tell me, what's this strange feeling you have?"
"I can't explain it," she said as her gaze scanned the darkening woods. "It's like there are a million unseen eyes watching us. Do you know what I mean?"
"A million, really?"
"Steven!"
"Sorry, sis." Steven swiveled his head side to side trying to see into the darkness. "It sure does get dark fast around here, doesn't it." Turning to Laura, Steven said, "Once it's totally dark we should be able to see if there are any eyes following us. Won't eyes reflect in the darkness?"
"I kind of hope they do, and I kind of hope they won't." Laura knelt down and rested her back against a tree. "Let's wait until it completely dark and our eyes are accustomed to the darkness. Then we can move forward. We have to find our way out of here Steven."
"Steven knelt next to his sister but did not rest against a tree trunk. Instead, he scanned the area constantly, his eyes searching the deepening darkness, for what he couldn't say. A moment later, hearing Laura's rythmic breathing, Steve turned and saw that Laura was fast asleep. "How can you sleep at a time like this?" he asked. Laura didn't stir.
"Laura! Laura!" Steven nearly shouted but got no response from his sister. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her. "Laura! Are you okay?" Laura still did not stir.
Steven slowly stood and looked into the darkness. He began to shout. "Help! Anybody. Can anybody hear--"
"Shhhh." The breath of the voice stirred the hair above Steven's ear. "Be quiet or they'll hear you."
Steven's skin prickled as if stung by a thousand bees. The hair on the back of his neck rose. He slowly turned to see who it was that has whispered into his ear. But after he had made a complete circle he saw no one.
"Who's there?" he croaked, his mouth dry. "Who is it?" Still no response. He could feel a presence, like there was someone standing right next to him. He could even feel the heat of someone's body. He looked down and saw that Laura was still asleep. Maybe she's not sleeping, he told himself. Maybe she's in a trance or something.
"No, she's fine," the disembodied voice said. "She'll wake up once you and I have agreed upon what to do."
Who, w wh who are you?" he stammered. "And where are you?"
"Right here, Steven." Slowly a light formed straight out from Steven's face. It was as if someone held a flashlight five feet above the ground and when it was turned on the light fell very slowly to the ground. Inside the shimmering light, Steven could see what looked like a small woman.
"Who's side are you on?" he asked as he backed away into the darkness.
"You would leave your sister here? What if I am evil?" The light grew brighter. "Come back, Steven. Come back."
