Chapter #7

Midnight Snack

A loud crash down the hall from his guest room woke William in the middle of the night. He peeked out the window of his room and noticed the moon high in the sky. It must has been just after midnight. William didn't know what that noise was, but he wanted to investigate. The embers of the dying fire in the fireplace still provided a faint amount of light. The fox went searching for his clothes but couldn't find them. The servants might have taken them for washing, William figured. So he took one of the smaller blankets off his bed and tightly wrapped it around his waist.

Carefully opening his bedroom door, the fox peered down both ends of the hall. On his right, the hallway extended off into the darkness. But on his right, around the corner, William noticed a light. He headed towards that part of the hallway, turned, and saw clear at the opposite end of the hall he stood in was a doorway flooded with light. Another clattering noise rattled down the hall. This must be where the noise is coming from.

Slowly making his way down the hall, more bangs and clattering came from the room. William was nervous. This wasn't his home and he didn't know what kinds of things went on here. He reached the doorway and peered inside.

William had found the mansion's kitchen. Dozens of cupboards lined the room's walls, a large kitchen island occupied the center of the room and on it were various kinds of knives and kitchen tools. Several sizes of cauldrons occupied another side of the room.

But what immediately caught William's attention were the two huge furry globes of fat. Three feet across each, both looking as if they were made of bread dough, and an equally orange tail gently wagged in the air. Under the mounds were two thick tree trunks of legs. This was clearly the rump of a particular rotund fox.

"Matthew?" asked William. The fox was leaning down and looking deep into one of the cupboards below him. Raising himself up out of the cupboard, William got a clear view of his fat back and haunches which formed into massive lovehandles. The obese fox turned around, hold two larges bowls, one in each arm. Matthew's front was just as bare as his backside, but at least his gut hung so far down below his waistline that any embarrassing situations were avoided. The fox's gut was a gigantic, white furred sphere with two pillowly moobs resting gently on top of them.

"Oh, hey William." The obese fox waddled towards the kitchen island and set both bowls down on it. William saw that they were filled to the brim with thick brown substance. Matthew grabbed a couple of the stools surrounding the island and set them right next to each other. The fox lowered himself onto the stools, each one bearing one of this oversized legs. "You here for a midnight snack too?"

"No, I just heard something crash and I figured that I'd check it out." Our adventurer replied.

"Ah, that was probably me." Matthew said. "The servants hid the chocolate pudding from me, so I have to dig around to find it." He waved his pudgy hand towards a stool opposite to him. "Please, sit."

William sat himself on the other side of the island. "Why are your servants hiding pudding from you?" he asked. The bowls Matthew had found were the size of standard salad bowls and completely full of pudding.

"It's because I'm starting to get too big." Matthew started. "All of these eating competitions are catching up to me. I'm really getting too fat to move around. So my servants hide food from me to make sure that I don't lose my mobility as soon. But I just love food too much." The obese fox lifted up one of the bowls to his mouth and started pouring the contents into his mouth. William could do nothing but stare in amazement as he watched the fox opposite to him chug down the giant bowl of pudding in a matter of seconds.

Matthew set the now-empty bowl down; chocolate stained his muzzle as he let out a low, rumbling burp.

"Which is why I need your help." said the obese fox.

"What? What do you mean? How I can help? Do you want me to help you lose weight or something?"

Matthew laughed, rippled were sent through his entire flabby body. "Oh no. I'd never lose a pound. Here's what need. Some ways away from here, there is a sorcerer. Or maybe he's a warlock. Or a wizard. I don't know and I don't care. But this guy has some seriously great enchanted items. And there's one that I want. There's a particular necklace that he has that makes the wearer weightless. I think he may had made it for traders who carry with them heavy loads like gold or gems. Well, I'm not a trader but I'm carrying a lot of weight. So what I want you to do is get that necklace for me. That way, I can keep eating all I want and still be able to walk around on my own. What do you say?"
