"Visit? He's awake?" you asked.

The older man - Doctor Saunders - nodded and answered "Yes...you've been out for nearly three days, Tim. You took a rather hard blow to the head yourself. Fortunately you didn't take any permanent harm, but I want you to take it easy for the next couple weeks. So are you sure you feel up to this right now?"

"Yes!" you said forcefully. "I want to see my dad!"

The doctors helped you into a wheelchair. You complained that you could walk on your own, but they insisted. It took only a few minutes to roll you down the hall to another room. You pushed open the door and went in to see your mom sitting by a hospital bed. Laying up in the bed was a woman you instantly recognized as Jessica Burciaga. You weren't sure exactly what you had expected but it wasn't this. You figured that if this woman was your dad, she would look frazzled - but Jessica instead had on makeup and her hair was simply styled.

They both turned to face you as you rolled in. "Tim!" your mom called out. "You're finally up!" She walked over and gave you a big hug. "I'm sorry I wasn't there when you woke up, but I've been with your fa....". She paused and gave you a look. "Do you know what happened?" she asked.

You glanced over at Jessica. "Uh, yeah?" you said hesistantly. "I mean the doc said that dad was...." you trail off and wave your hand toward Jessica. She blushed and gave a sad smile.

"Yes, Tim, it's me," she said in a resigned voice. "Believe it or not, this is your 'old man' now."

"So it's true?" you gasped. "They...they really put your brain into ...her?!"

"I know it's hard to believe, but yes, she is your father," your mom told you, taking your hand to calm you.

You winced. "She?" you asked.

Both women looked at each other and then back at you. Your dad said "It sounds weird to me too, but I might as well get used to it."

At your confused expression, your mom continued. "I guess the doctors didn't explain the legal complications... you see, Tim, what the doctors did was very unorthodox. None of are sure what the implications would be - all the public attention, medical and government scrutiny. We're concerned that if this came out, your dad would be kept in a hospital for study - or at best have our lives turned into a freak show. And that's if they even believed us. I'm not sure that the hospital would admit to what happened. So we agreed to keep quiet in return for a sizeable settlement."

You understood her logic but her explanation only further confused you. "What do you mean, 'keep quiet'? What are we supposed to do?" you asked.

Your dad spoke up. "What she means, Tim, is that as far as the world is concerned, Paul Connors died 3 days ago." She grimaced. "I'm now Jessica Burciaga and will stay that way."

You stared at them, your mouth hanging open in stunned silence.

She continued. "The wreck and 'brain surgery' gives me an excuse to take some time off to rest and recuperate. Your mom will help me learn the basics of being a woman. And I'll try to figure out Jessica's life and what I'm going to do long-term. So for now..."
