Chapter #5

Another Goodbye

    by: Unknown
13/9/08

Had dinner with Paul and Jess from work. Jess was quiet but things seemed ok between them. Maybe there's nothing to the rumors, they seemed happy. Went to see The Kingdom and ate at the food court after. Jess and I decided to go out to Selton on the long weekend. Still a bit worried for her so will be nice to get some time alone.

The subsequent scrawls are unreadable. You're tempted to continue in search of more English language entries but times short so instead you grab the box and journal and head downstairs. As you step onto the ground floor you see Megan's father slumped down in one of the armchairs, his eyes are closed and breathing shallow. You don't know why, but in that split second before he lifts his head, a single terrible impulse flashes through your mind. He's dead your thoughts silently scream before they can be rebuked. But no, he opens his eyes again to stare into yours.

"Ah, sorry I must have dozed off" he says, blinking slowly in the evening light. His gaze drifts down to the box in your arms. "So that's it?" he asks. "Yep, last box" you reply. He pulls himself up from the chair and takes the final box from your arms. Together you walk to the back of the moving truck in silence before he slides those last remnants of his daughter’s life into the back amongst the property of the living.

"Well, thanks for everything" he says "I really mean that, my...my daughter" he pauses for a moment, slowly searching his mind for the right words "I know that my daughter was very lonely here before you came along. I want to thank you for everything you did”. He said "I didn't do anything" you murmur, not quite sure how to respond to this "I mean, it was a pleasure to be able to spend time with both of you." He smiles for a split second and the awkwardness of the moment is broken. "Well my plane leaves in a couple of hours so I'd better get on the road" he exclaims, clapping you on the shoulder "Be sure to stay in touch". You wave him off as he climbs up into the cab and starts the ignition. As the truck disappears around the corner you're left standing in front of the now deserted house feeling very alone.

Later that night you lay awake in bed reminiscing. You think back over the past two years, all the ups and downs, the joy and the pain. Once you open yourself to one memory it leads to another and then another. They flow onwards in a never-ending procession. You think that it would be easy enough to go insane on a night like this. They torture you, but at the same time a part of you doesn't want to let these memory's go, to forget even the slightest detail of Megan's life would seem to be the ultimate betrayal. After tossing and turning for a few hours you know you can't go on like this. You climb out of bed to...
