As much as Alex hated to admit it, he realized that Tony was right...he'd need to get dressed sooner or later. While Tony went to take a shower, Alex slowly made his way back to Megan's bedroom to get dressed.
Once back in Megan's room, Alex closed the door and leaned against it as he thought about what to do next. There had to be a reason as to why he'd woken up in the body of his deceased girlfriend; but for the life of him he couldn't think of what it could be.
As he walked over to Megan's closet to get dressed, his vision suddenly blurred and he found himself in a white void. A quick examination showed that, to his relief, he had his male body back. Just as he was breathing a sigh of relief, he heard a voice behind him say, "Don't get too attached; this is only temporary Alex."
Turning around, in disbelief, Alex saw Megan standing in front of him. Alex didn't believe this was possible; because his girlfriend was dead...yet there she was standing in front of him. "Me-Megan, i-is that you!?"
"It's really me, Alex." Walking over, with a smile on her face, Megan said, "I guess you can say I'm an angel now."
"What's going on?" confused, Alex said, "Wh-Why did I wake up looking like you?"
"I...brought you here to explain everything." Sighing, Megan said, "I need to know if you'll do something for me, something important."
"You know I'd do anything for you, Megan."
Looking at me, Megan said, "I was afraid you'd say that."
Starting to get confused, Alex said, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm sure you noticed some...changes when you woke up this morning?"
"Yeah, you could say that." Pausing, Alex said, "Why did I look like you?"
"I'll explain that in a moment; right now I need you to listen to me."
"Okay."
"I died before my time; someone made a mistake and now I have unfinished business on Earth."
"So that means you can come back to Earth, right?"
"No, I can't return to my former body now that I've...crossed over." Pausing, Megan said, "Someone else has to take my place; to 'fill my shoes' so to speak."
Coming to a realization, Alex said, "I'm supposed to be the one to 'fill your shoes,' aren't I?"
"Yes; but only if you agree willingly to do so." Pausing, Megan said, "You'll essentially become me and live my life."
"So what, I'd have your memories?"
"That's pretty much what I've been told; it'll basically be like I never died in the accident."
Something dawned on Alex at the moment. "If I were to become you, what happens to me...I mean Alex?"
"Reality will be changed so that Alex was the one that died; not me...you."
"So in order to live your life; I've basically got to put my family through what yours is going through now?"
"That's why I was reluctant to ask you; I know this is a hard choice to make." Looking at Alex, Megan said, "The...people in charge tell me that once you wake up, your family will remember the old reality for only an hour before things change.
"Can I have a chance to say goodbye to them before they forget the old reality?"
Nodding, Megan said, "They're giving you that time to explain to them what's going to happen; so that you can tie up any lose ends before the reality is altered."
"Who are 'they'?"
"I'm not entirely sure; all I can say is that the rest of us have to listen to what they say."
"There's more...like you?"
"Yeah; at any given moment there are around 2000...like me." Looking at me, Megan said, "We're waiting to be reincarnated."
"Reincarnated?" looking at Megan, Alex said, "Does that mean I'll see you again?"
"I'm not sure, Alex." Smiling, Megan said, "It's a small world though, I'm sure we'll see each other again."
After thinking it over forever a few minutes, Alex turned to Megan and said, "I'll do it...I'll become you and live your life."
"Are you sure, Alex? This is a life-altering decision."
"I know; but I still want to do it."
"Okay then, if you're really sure about it." Kissing Alex on the lips, Megan said, "Have a good life...Megan Smith."
It was then that Alex felt his body changing; slowly taking on Megan's form as everything around him faded away. Before he could say anything, he found himself back in Megan's bedroom. As Alex looked around to get his bearings, his tucked a loose piece of hair behind his ear just like Megan used to do.
Alex walked back downstairs to the kitchen a short time later; having put on a skirt and top with a pair of flip flops. He'd also put on a little makeup and placed his hair in a pony tail. Tony was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee; looking up as Alex walked into the room. Catching a glimpse of Alex's outfit, Tony said, "Alex, why are you wearing that?
Looking at Tony, in the same way that Megan used to speak, Alex said, "I'm not Alex anymore...dad; I'm Megan."
"Wh-What are you talking about?" looking at Alex, Tony said, "Did you just call me dad?"
Alex quickly explained everything that'd happened while in Megan's room; keeping an eye on the time. Once he was finished, Alex said, "For all intents and purposes, I'm Megan now; I've got her personality and all of her memories."
"Let me see if I understand this." Pausing, Tony said, "You sacrificed your life in order to fulfill Megan's...destiny; only you don't know what that is?"
"That's right." Getting up, Alex said, "I'd love to explain it some more; but I've only got a little while to say goodbye to Alex's...err my family before they cease to remember that he...I'm still alive."
Alex quietly walked out of the kitchen; leaving Tony to watch as he left. As he watched, Tony couldn't help but see that Alex was already adjusting to Megan's mannerisms and the way she walked.
