Chapter #6

A rich, flowing white and gold robe perfect for...

by: Scipio Africanus Author IconMail Icon
Eliot knew he didn't have the muscles to pull off wearing one of the warrior get-ups successfully—he'd seen all too many pale, gangly nerds make fools of themselves trying to dress like muscle-bound action heroes. No, an important part of a successful costume was body shape, and Eliot simply wasn't a warrior. Fortunately, there's not a great deal of physical difference between a powerful sorcerer who spends his days studying ancient mystical tomes and a socially awkward college student who spends his days reading cheesy soft-cover fantasy novels. With this reassurance and a half a semester of acting classes under his belt, Eliot selected the flowing white robes confident that he could easily pull off the role. Technically, the robes came from the section labeled "Clerics, Druids and members of priestly orders," but he figured it hardly mattered. A fantasy-style robe was a fantasy-style robe, right?

After slipping the robes over his shoulders and admiring the fit, Eliot was suddenly struck by just how big this store really was. He hadn't really noticed as he'd been guided through the winding shelves by the talkative owner, but now faced with navigating the twisting racks himself Eliot realized he had no idea how to get back to the front of the store. However, upon consideration Eliot found he could make out the faint sound of voices several racks over. At first Eliot was surprised, but then berated himself for his silliness. Of course there were other people in the store—there was no way an operation this large survived by serving one customer at a time, after all! Making his way toward the source of the noise, Eliot considered the least embarrassing way to ask for directions. Should he simply say he'd gotten 'turned around' or should he open with some kind of casual remark on the confusing layout of the store?

As Eliot rounded the final corner, though, the question became entirely academic. At the other end of the isle was not a couple looking for costumes, but landscape. Instead of more rows of costumes, the hallway emptied onto a wide vista of rolling hills and a tiny village visible in the distance. Now, Babbingtree's was a big store, but even this place couldn't contain several square miles of open countryside. Whatever this was, it was something far outside the ordinary.
