He couldn't help the reflex. Even as he stepped in, Felix was forced to push his hands to his ears, to try to block out as much of the sound as he could. Though he couldn't leave or just run away, it was impossible for him to do much of anything with so much noise echoing through the cell. As the minutes passed, the sound at least died down long enough for him to stand it, even though he almost squinted as he tried to force as much of the sound out as possible.
After the last meal, it was a bit surprising to Felix that the beast had recovered so quickly. It hadn't even been a day, and it was already at it once again, thrashing about, the chains on it already somewhat strained and marks strewn everywhere over the ground. There were the signs of a few injuries around as well, and it was easy to guess that so far, the attempts at taming the dragon had not gone smoothly.
"Okay, I get it, you're upset!" Felix found himself shouting at the dragon, though his voice was drowned out by its continued shrieking. The dragon kept struggling down on its chains, trying to push away, the racket from its struggles only adding to the din in the room. "I'm not happy about this either, so let's just make sure we both survive!"
He moved to try to get a better view, but another roar forced him back a little bit as he kept his eyes pointed at the dragon, trying to catch its motion and not get injured again by it. However, though it was still thrashing about, its claws didn't seemed to be aimed in his direction anymore, though its gaze certainly was.
"Look, just calm down! I don't know whatever made you this way, if it's because you're a fire dragon, or because you're chained up, or whatever! But as long as you're here, I have to try to take care of you, and as much as you might not like it, I don't think anybody else is going to be taking the job!" Felix kept shouting, uncertain why he was even trying. He could barely hear his own voice, and he had no idea if the dragon would understand or even hear his shouts. But there wasn't any better way to get the beast to calm down, and it seemed to at least respond to him earlier, so...
The sound suddenly quieted to a growl as Felix just stared at the dragon, realizing that at some point, he had stepped away from the cart and put himself into plain sight of the dragon. He swallowed as he recalled the conversation he had heard earlier, worried that he would be caught in a blast of flame or the like. However, the dragon simply continued growling, and though it didn't seem happy, at least it was quiet enough for him to think and to move without a huge worry.
"Okay... I've got your stuff here... I'll just..."
It felt a bit awkward for him to try to move to the cart and get everything without turning from the dragon. Even though it was uncomfortable, though, he forced himself to not break eye contact for a moment. And though the dragon still made a few stiff motions at its bindings, it at least stopped thrashing as it watched him. Its motions were gentler, though it could hardly be be described that way when its claws still slammed into the ground when they moved.
"Here... Here you go..." Felix stepped forwards slowly, carrying a piece of meat at arm's length. He held his breath as he walked forwards, his gaze starting to wander a little from the dragon to the ground, knowing where he would no longer be safe, wondering if he should even try to do it this way. His instinct told him to just throw the meat at the dragon, and to keep himself safe, but another, nagging part of him said to at least try it, and that he could pull away fast enough.
