Hearing this made Rei's heart flutter in a strange way. It was similar to what she felt that night after the battle with the 5th Angel. Her cheeks felt warm and a tiny smile was on her lips for a split second, it was so small and quick that almost nobody would noticed it, even if they were looking right at her, but Misato noticed.
"Wow.." Misato said in awe as she was one of the only people who would notice the rare treasure that was Rei's smile. Rei looked at her confused "Shinji wasn't exaggerating when he said your beautiful when you smile."
Rei's cheeks became warmer and her heart fluttered harder.[What is this?] she thought as she never felt this way before. "He really said that?" she asked softly.
Misato's impish smile returned "Well his exact words were"Her smile was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and I will do everything in my power to protect her and-""
"MISATO!!" Shinji shouted in embarrassment as she laughed at how red his face was. Rei meanwhile was still trying to process the feelings she was having. They were unfamiliar and a little scary but not unpleasant.
"Hey Rei." Misato said as she leaned into her ear to whisper something that made Rei's eyes widen a little and look back at her commanding officer in slight shock.
"Why would I say that?" she said confused.
"Trust me it well be worth it now go on." Misato said mischievously as she playfully shoved Rei over to Shinji. Rei was unsure of this but decided to follow Misato strange instructions. She looked at the Third Child and said.
"Shinji if you land a solid hit on Misato I will give you a kiss."
Re wasn't really sure what had happened but when the sparing had resumed Shinji preformed much better then before and even managed to land a solid hit. Misato did not make it easy for him but was impressed her plan worked out so well. Naturally Rei was hesitant to actually kiss Shinji but after some in encouragement form Misato and Shinji telling her it could just be on the cheek was enough for him she followed through. Needless to say Shinji was a happy boy for the rest of the day.
From then on the next 2 months followed a similar pattern with Rei stopping by the gym almost every day to watch Shinji train with Misato. And every time he performed admirably she would reward him with a kiss. But that was not the only ways in which the two Eva pilots grew closer, Shinji would invite Rei over to have dinner and even offer some cooking lessons, which she turned out to be a natural at. And Rei would always enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of Shinji and Misato's apartment. Even though she knew the inevitable outcome of the war she still found these moments of peace to be very enjoyable.
Though Shinji was not the only one she bonded with over these past few months. Misato proved to be very insightful when it came to the strange emotions she was feeling towards Shinji lately. And she was a big help in finding new bras that fit her since Rei's breasts were still getting bigger.
