Steven Spielberg released his WWII comedy movie 1941 in 1979. It takes place one week after the attack on Pearl Harbor, where a Japanese submarine commander played by Thoshiro Mifune is searching for another target to destroy. He has his sights set on Hollywood, but the sub's compass is broken and they must find a way to locate it so they can bomb it, claiming another victory for Japan.
It had an all-star cast! John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Treat Williams, Ned Beatty, Tim Matheson, Robert Stack, John Candy, and Christopher Lee. Penny Marshall has an uncredited cameo. Susan Backlinie, who starred in the opening scene of Jaws, appears in a similar scene in the opening scene of 1941. Fortunately, she survives in this movie.
