Newbie Character Study

I haven't written in 23 years. :::GULP::: This is my maiden voyage into the humbling world of public writing. So since I don't want to take on more than I can handle just yet, I'll start with a portfolio of studies. This is my first draft.
I am looking for honest, constructive criticism. Please comment on tone, illustration, form, continuity (or lack thereof!) - everything!
