I worked a summer job during college in which I helped insulate houses in Maine. We used bags of cellulose that went into a hopper, blown through more than 100 ft of hose into one-inch holes drilled though the outside sheathing between the studs. We also drilled holes around the window frames. We'd blow insulation into a bottom hole until we saw some insulation coming out of the top hole. Then we'd finish blowing into the top hole. I was on a ladder three floors up blowing insulation into the bottom hole of a window frame. As soon as I opened the nozzle, I blew out a LOT of angry wasps who had nested inside the frame. Being on a ladder 30 feet in the air with no fast way down, I pulled the nozzle out and began spraying the cellulose all around me, praying I wouldn't get stung. After about 20 seconds, still screaming and running out of cellulose, I was able to start climbing down. I jumped the final eight feet, and headed for the truck. Miraculously, I didn't get stung. But it took me three hours to clean up the yard. |
