I don't know about one law, but I think all laws should be looked at and rewritten such that any reasonably educated person can understand them! Having said that, one law that springs to mind as relevant to this site is the Obscene Publications Act (1860 ish, plus amendments) which prohibits, amongst other things, the publication of obscene material. With the one minor drawback, of not actually definitively saying what obscene is: (1)For the purposes of this Act an article shall be deemed to be obscene if its effect is, if taken as a whole, such as to tend to deprave and corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it. Which gives rise to concerns surrounding free speech. Amongst others, a case was rather famously raised against Lady Chatterley's Lover... https://www.historyhit.com/culture/the-trial-of-lady-chatterleys-lover-and-how-i... Which, fortunately, went in favour of the written word but we're still in a position where an author writing fiction, however distasteful some might find it, risks a protracted and costly prosecution over mere words. If you don't like something harmless then don't read it! N.B. Other laws protect and impose limits on free speech (e.g. libel, slander, Official Secrets Act, instigation, and so on) with measurable harms remain justifiable. |
