Have you ever been caught in a natural disaster? I have not, but I've been close to one. The most interesting close call was in the 1976. I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, we were undergoing refit. In the middle of this, Typhoon Pamela was going to hit Guam with 150 mph winds (240km/h). (Yes, we were officially stationed in Pearl Harbor, but the boat made its FBM Deterrent patrols out of Guam.) We had to get underway to avoid it, which mean making the Engineroom and Reactor ready for sea. And we did. The thing was, we submerged and went deep. How deep? Deeper than 400 feet, that's all I can say. In the middle of the Typhoon, the CO wanted to come to Periscope Depth to see what the ocean (waves) looked like. We never made it shallower than 200 feet because the boat was taking design rolls (45 degrees) to either side then. So back we went, deep. There, the boat was stable, as stable as you are on your computer right now. There are others, all minor, this one stands out in my mind. Jim |
