I used to own a travel trailer that stayed parked in a campground in Roscoe, NY. This was in the days when I still enjoyed fly fishing. The campground was bordered on one side by the Beaverkill River. One night, I was awakened by a pounding on the door and ordered to "get out now" by a member of the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department. It seems a dam/spillway had collapsed further upriver, and a flood was imminent. I left everything, got into my car, and headed for the Roscoe Diner (open 24 hours, like good diners should be). I said "used to own," because when we were allowed to return, there were no signs that my trailer had ever existed. I still send contributions to the Roscoe VFD, which lost an engine to the flood. Happily, no lives were lost. |
