What is something you do that would confuse a time traveler from 1900? Living the retired life as I am lucky enough to live today. In 1935, The U.S. Social Security Act set 65 as the official retirement age, which was later adopted globally. This was modeled after the German plan of 1889. However, American Express and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad beat all retirement plans with their private pension plans established in 1875 -1880. The idea of retirement grew from a necessity for the elderly in the late 19th century to a widespread, expected lifestyle phase in the post-war mid-20th century, particularly as life expectancies improved. ![]() ![]() Jim |
