Task 4: February 12 - 25 Tell us about one (1) genre that you've never written anything for. Name the genre and tell us why it's not something that has sparked any writing from you. Create a piece of about 200+ words. I've never used the Genealogy genre in my writing. As a basic search showed there are fewer than three hundred Static Items that carry the Genealogy genre tag - and with the number of Genealogy-tagged poetry items being much, much smaller - it's clear I'm not the only one who doesn't diligently dabble in dates and degrees of descendancy (I do love me some alliteration, though *bigsmile*). That's not to say I don't write about my family's history. My port contains numerous stories and poems that detail, or at least allude to, various doings involving members of my family tree; they just don't exceed the temporal zone delimited by my paternal and maternal grandparents. Did you notice I said "my family's history"? It just occurred to me that right up until this moment, and for whatever reason, I seem to have viewed Genealogy as a tag correctly applied only to my own family tree. With that understanding, the only story I've written that could "properly" carry the tag would be the biographical item I did about my grandfather; as it is, I used Biographical, Family, and Personal. It's possible I considered using Genealogy, but concluded that with only one generation separating us, it just didn't apply. The idea that the genre speaks to gaps of at least three generations seems to have been my viewpoint. It now occurs to me that the genre could be used in any story with some aspect of any familial history, and it wouldn't have to be filled with begats, either. How that might be done, and when might I do it? That remains to be seen, but - it could happen any day now. [WC: 277] ![]() |
