Running through the list of genres, the only one that popped out at me that I have never written for is LGBTQ+. On the surface, I think to myself, “Why not?” It's not like I haven’t associated with or supported the many acquaintances or friends I have met over the years. For that matter, there are many stories I could tell about the people I have known, their hardships, their accomplishments, their wacky stories, and their extraordinary personalities. But that is their stories that I was privileged to be a part of or hear about from them directly. Do I have the right to write about something that does not affect me personally? Sure, why not? Don’t writers write all sorts of things from experience, a prompt, or a message they can do justice to or promote a cause? But do I feel that I should write about their stories without their permission? And the answer to that is no. It was a memory that was shared, a reminder that life can be cruel or full of laughter, and a private life belongs to them and not me to put it out there for all to see. So I will continue to be a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community for the friends who have told or shared their experiences of a life they have chosen, if for nothing more than to understand they are people who sometimes just need a friend to share their stories with.
