"Task 2: January 15 - 28" About three years ago, I got an idea for a romance/mystery story which I planned to do for NaNoWriMo. The main character is a simple girl (Brenna) down on her luck, who moves to a new town to start over. She knows no one in the town, living in her car, pinching pennies until she finds a job. Rather than setting the story in an existing town, I started designing a little town: street names, shops, library, park, police station, bar, etc. Nothing too crazy, just a small, manageable town. I drew a map and labeled everything so that I could keep the details straight as I wrote the story. Brenna finds a job at a coffee shop (The Ravenwood Cafe) that doubles as a used bookstore. Luckily, the job comes with an efficiency apartment above the shop. The owner is an older woman who takes Brenna under her wing. Brenna’s job is to help with the coffee shop, and a different male character looks over the books. The only thing I know for sure is that Brenna and this male character have an attraction. What the actual mystery will be has yet to be determined. Why Brenna needed to start her life over is still unclear. I just feel stuck and haven’t touched the folder in months. I stopped working on it because one day, as I was explaining my idea to someone and they just got a blank look on their face. Perhaps I wasn’t discussing it with the right person; maybe it just didn’t sound like an interesting genre to them. I didn’t ask them for feedback; I just changed the subject. I’m not sure how anyone can help me with this project because I’m at a complete loss. Do I need more planning, or have I planned too much? I don’t want to discard the idea, and so I now keep the folder on my desk in plain sight, in the hope it lures me back in. (Throws hands in the air and heads to the coffeemaker.) 341 words |
