I am probably biased, considering I am about to go back to university again. (I have a couple of diplomas, a few degrees and have been offered a place in the Masters programme...) The role they play is further education and supporting legitimate study and research for the betterment of everyone. That is, I know, rose-coloured glasses of me. That was the role in the old days. Now, I am not so sure, when anyone who can say the words, "I is an student," can get a Degree in Something Useless and still aren't qualified enough to work in McDonalds, I think sometimes this higher education has just been dumbed down to make people feel like they've achieved something. But as a source of further education, to ensure up-to-date and relevant and peer-reviewed information is given to those who are at the cutting edge of research, education and human thought, they are a fine concentration point for those elements. I just wish they didn't let political, religious and cultural agendas interfere with the dissemination of actual knowledge. |
