They seem to be a place that moderate to well-off parents can park late-teen kids after being fed up with them as teens with the hope the kids will then be able to find a job and move out of the house.

Colleges/universities should be helping people expand their thinking ability and understanding of the world and life to better help humanity and the world in general. Unfortunately, many are just capitalistic businesses that sell information seminars and promote physical competition among colleges/universities for the almighty buck.
