MOVIE: Suspicion - 1941 - In the book, the ne'er-do-well husband was supposed to actually be the murderer his wife suspected him to be and indeed, he kills her as she fears. However, the studio couldn't have their dashing leading man, Cary Grant, be a killer, so they changed the ending. As the couple drive along a mountainous curve, she thinks he is setting up her death. Instead, he confesses to lying about many financial crimes but her fears about his murderous intent are allayed and they drive off into a future of marital bliss. Unrealistic, and Hitchcock missed the opportunity to make a film as riveting in its portrayal of evil as his later film - Psycho. |
