I worked at Kroger's cheese counter for a little over a year after retiring. Lots of shoplifters, some I felt bad for but this one bothered me. He was the panhandler that stood at the corner nearly every day. It was a pretty rich neighborhood. I saw him walk out with shopping carts with pop and detergent and other things often. Everyone saw it so I didn't react. Conceivably he could have paid at the checkout at the other end of the store but not likely. Eventually a manager ended it by stopping him before he left the store so no charges. I was working for $9 and hour for extra cash. Many others there had started at low pay and worked their way up to a livable wage. This guy made his job panhandling and stealing when he was perfectly capable of working. |
