Oh I could write quite a dissertation on this subject, centered on the thievery I've seen in all aspects of life. I've never witnessed what I'll call a true crime (burglary, homicide, etc) being committed, so I can't talk about that. But, on my first Submarine, I was in charge of test equipment for my division on a couple of patrols. One of our meters had failed, so the Repair Parts Petty Office (RPPO) ordered one. It arrived before we went to sea, I logged it properly and stored it. After the patrol was complete, the Blue Crew relieved us. Imagine my complete shock when that meter could not be found. Everyone accused me of stealing it of course, especially that RPPO, who married my sister a few years later.. I offered to let anyone inspect my belongings (my bunk, seabag, anywhere they wanted to look), because I knew I hadn't stolen it. A few years later I was home (in New Mexico) on leave and stayed with my sister. Her husband (who had been that RPPO) and I were in the garage doing minor work, and he pulls out that stolen meter! To say I was pissed would be an understatement. Did I actually witness him stealing it? No. But I saw the result of his action. I can be so gullible and naive at times. Jim Dorrell{/sig} |
