Yes, that did happen -- I meant to mention that as the only place I can think of where adults got their hands on the SPL and did anything in the ordinary way with it. (Blackwell gets his hands on it, but he has very specialized interests in it.) But that is also an example of the story going the horror route -- and it's also one where Will is a potential victim, not a co-conspirator.
