If you do take critics (or their critiques) of AI seriously it certainly isn't apparent to me in anything you've said here or what you've said to me personally, but that might be misreading of intent on my end. Regardless: I think the example put forth is a faulty equivalence, one that I have huge disagreements with and one. I don't think what is being done is remotely the same way one would use a thesaurus. Because while you can use AI like a thesaurus, a thesaurus or a dictionary or a writing model or a beta reader or workshoppers or other writers still require you to write. Because it is just one or a few words is what makes it okay, and what you pointed out doesn't change that. In my opinion AI should, at most, be used in a way to supplement one's own writing sparingly. Looking outside the confines of one's own skull. Which is very much not what's being done in this scenario. It is being used as a ghost writer. Which is fine, as long as you keep it to yourself or don't publish it anywhere. It's not like I haven't done the same thing. But I don't think it's a substitute for actually writing, nor should it be treated as such. |
