Lot of deathbed confessions which can vary from person to person but like you said, you don't know. As for the money in the riverbed and no body, if he was alive he could have planted it there to make it look like he didn't make it. I agree that mysteries being good things. As you said, it keeps us interested. Keeps the curiosity level up. The never ending search and solving of this mystery will keep on.
