With books, if the synopsis sounds interesting, I look online to see if the beginning is available to read. If it still sounds interesting when I've gotten through those pages, I find the book.

I don't seek out movies or series, but if someone else mentions one that sounds interesting, I'll research it to gauge my own interest.
