A few things: - I liked previous work by the writer/ creator - The blurb intrigues me - I read the first 2 or so pages, and the style makes me think I'm going to like it; with a film at home, the first 10 minutes does the same thing - People who know what I like recommend it to me (my preferred editor, my mother, son, ex-wife, youngest sister and, recently added to the list, my daughter) - Seeing a description of a book that looks interesting in a mail-out from a publisher I have worked with successfully in the past - I am paid to read/ watch something (I am a reviewer - it happens!) - If Oprah or Ellen or one of those people recommends a book or film, I know I'm not going to like it and so won't read/ watch it Things that don't work - Random reviews - Cover/poster - "Star" ratings - Famous people recommending stuff - If it is written by a person famous for something else |
