A Wolf Called Fire by Rosanne Parry Written five years later, A Wolf Called Fire is the companion book to A Wolf Called Wander, and it follows Swift's brother, Warm, in their growing up and the aftermath of the attack. Whereas Swift escapes alone with his life, Warm has the opportunity to lead his younger siblings out of danger. A natural follower, Warm doubts his ability to lead and protect the pups as their pack leader, but circumstances leave him with no choice. What follows is a heartwarming adventure full of danger, hunting lessons, and puphood innocence, all leading up to a very satisfying conclusion, inspired by the true story of Wolf 8, who arrived at Yellowstone National Park as a pup and whose unusual choices as an alpha transformed the lives and leadership of the pups he took under his wing. This book is written wonderfully, with the relatively simple dialogue of A Wolf Called Wander but executed much more skillfully. Character interactions are meaningful and entertaining, offering personal details that reveal each character's habits and personality -- as well as some surprises. Character development happens within each character, throughout the book, and it’s done beautifully. Partly because of the pups' presence and partly because of the stronger storytelling, the peril in this book is considerably stronger than in the first one, making it a much more riveting read. I read the whole second half of the book in one sitting because I needed to see what happened next! I love everything about this book and will definitely be reading it again in the future! I love the characters, especially Warm and Snow and the pups! The surprises hit just right; the writing is beautiful, with the right amount of description; storytelling devices are well executed; and the ending is immensely satisfying. The illustrations, done by the same person as in the previous book, are still charming, are absolutely gorgeous, and capture so well the key moments of the story! This is precisely the sort of book I want to read when I'm looking for something lighthearted and simple but with the right amount of peril, personality, and meaning. A Wolf Called Fire is a beautiful read for those of us who love a good animal story and a story with lots of heart, personal moments, growth, a hint of romance, and excitement. And like its predecessor, A Wolf Called Fire is an excellent book for young readers interested in wolves and the natural world. This one is definitely now on my list of favorite books and belongs on my favorite bookshelf. |
