As an adult, the seating policy that Southwest was doing for quite a while where they did not assign seats. I always. ALWAYS. Ended up in a middle seat between two strangers. One time it was a husband and wife. Let that sink in for a moment. They both wanted to talk to me, I wanted to talk to NEITHER of them.
As a college student, I took a bus to Wisconsin to Chicago O'Hare airport. All flights got cancelled, every single one of them, due to fog. I had exactly enough money for a bus ride back home, but even if I had a credit card there were no hotels to be had. I had to sleep overnight on the floor of O'Hare. This was the early 80's, BTW. I found myself a Marine in full dress uniform and asked him to hang out with me. It made me feel safe. The floor, however, not so much.
As a 12 year-old, I was flying from O'Hare to New York state as an unaccompanied child. One adult dropped me off at my gate. There was no other passengers there, but I was kid so I didn't realize it was because the flight had already boarded. The agent never checked on me, even though I was all by myself. After a while I went and asked her how long until my flight boarded and she informed me it was gone. I lost my ever-loving $h!t. I had high anxiety for YEARS after that any time I needed to fly.
