This isn't something I learned this week, but I was reminded of. Back in the early 20th century, the US Congress needed a plan to deal with a meat shortage in the states. The plan they came up with was to import hippos and raise them in the Louisiana bayous. Considering Louisiana is currently hippo-free, this plan obviously didn't go through. I was reminded of this because I bought an alternative history book about what the country would look like if the plan had gone through. |
