Jim Butcher.

Some of his early writing was unpolished, but he got better with practice, as many of us do (with anything). I especially like the Dresden Files, but I've also read his other stuff.

I think it was his compelling plots and characterization that kept me coming back, even if I found the early writing to be amateurish in some ways.
