The relatively unknown US author, John Yount. I came across Hardcastle in a Detroit thrift shop during an American trip many years ago and the quality of his writing impressed me so much that it's since been a labour of love to collect his entire, sadly too frugal, output. His novels cover a wide range of themes and are written in several distinct styles but one thing that never varies is the quality of the writing. I'd read his shopping list if anyone out there happens to have one? *Wink*
