I'd have to say, "No." For a start, it's 3000+ km, like driving from Houston to a hundred miles north of Boise, Idaho. Once you leave Adelaide, you'll come across towns every 6 hours or so; after Alice Springs, there is nothing until Darwin, so you need a car with a really good mileage. Next, even when it's cold, it's still 30-odd degrees C (over 85 Imperial) out there. Thee is very limited phone coverage; you will need to invest in a satellite phone. If your car breaks down, it can be up to a 20 hour wait for someone to come along. Very little water out there; take your own. Next, kangaroos are insane and very stupid. They will race your car and then side-swipe you. If you run over a wombat, the chances are it will break your axle, and give the wombat a headache. If you run over a snake, be careful - they have been known to wrap around the axle and, next time you stop, will work their way into the car. Oh, yeah - most snakes are venomous here. And, finally, until you reach Uluru and then Kakadu, it is boring! Once you are north of Port Augusta in South Australia, you have Coober Pedy, which is underground, then Uluru (which is a few hundred kilometres out the way), then Alice Springs (considered to have one of the highest crime rates in Australia, then Tennant Creek, then Kakadu, then Darwin... and that's it for 3000+ km. One of the most common things we hear is a tourist from the UK or USA goes missing and is later found dead because they decided to go on a little road trip. Want to go from Adelaide to Darwin? I recommend the Ghan, the train - it is comfortable, air conditioned, catered and you can sleep. |
