In the major cities, yes. Perth has one of the best, with trains connected to buses and a really good timetable. Adelaide, where I grew up, has a mixture of train, tram and bus, and works well, if only they'd leave the timetables alone! Melbourne's train system is amazing. Sydney and Brisbane... you can catch public transport or eat for a week.

Outside the major cities, rural Victoria and country NSW have reasonable services, but elsewhere, not viable. So I don't have public transport here, just a bus 3 times a week that goes to Adelaide.
