Some Indigenous Australians think of it as "Invasion Day", as it celebrates when the first settlers (the First Fleet, a bunch of soldiers and convicts) arrived in the country in 1788.
It was only made a national holiday in 1988; I grew up knowing it as New South Wales Day because my state (the only non-convict state, and we are still smug about it) was founded officially in 1836, but there is evidence of sealers arriving long before then, and the Dutch landed in Western Australia in the 1600s, long before NSW was founded.
So the rest of Australia outside of Sydney are meh about it.
It would be like if New York City's founding date was declared "USA Day."
As such, many only celebrate it because it's a public holiday, but there will be protests and other anti-Australia Day activities occurring.
Wow, this was a much heavier start than I was expecting!
