It's the number of messages. In "Threaded View," Nostrum's Sep 15 message is at the bottom of the "First" page. Under the Reply box beneath it, you should see a bold "Next >>." The rest of the messages are on the following pages.

In unthreaded, some messages have so many Replies that they will shift off the right side of the center column on the page after the titles displayed vertical use up all the space. At some point, some messages may not show. Known constraint of the system. Similar thing that happens on the list of chapters in the Interactives.
