I don't think there is much I wouldn't let kids read. Considering I was reading pulp fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, HP Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, TH White, Agatha Christie by age 9, I think being exposed to ideas and stories can only be beneficial. As for crime-solving, it is just another genre. I had The Hardy Boys at that age as well. I think the main thing about kids reading anything is that they have an adult to discuss the book with, especially if ideas are confusing or the details are beyond their experience. I do get that some adults use reading to brainwash their children, and that is always nasty. But if the child chooses to read something, then adults should be encouraging and be willing to talk about it. |
