It's good no one asked my Mom about this or I would have missed out in a lot of books growing up. Though... I do wish I hadn't read Steven King as early as I did. The books were left lying around and I read pretty much everything.

As for kids today, I think it depends on the child and a lot of factors already mentioned above.

I do think reading is a critical skill.
