Well right now, I supposedly live near the area the Jersey Devil haunts. About nineteen minutes north, the Pine Barrens start.
The Pine Barrens are a massive forest that covers a lot of New Jersey. Legend has it that about two hundred years ago a woman was pregnant with her thirteenth child. She didn't want it but she carried it to term.
Well she eventually went into labor and the midwife was trying to comfort the woman. Just as the baby was about to be born, this lady cries "may the devil be with it!"
Instead of a normal child, this thing with horse hooves, claws, bat wings, a bifurcated tail and glowing red eyes is born. It kills its own mother and the midwife.(how we know what the lady said at this point is beyond me; it's an urban legend just roll with it.)
The creature escaped into the Pine Barrens and has been attacking people ever since. Even though two hundred years have passed, Jersey Devil sightings are still reported in that woods and in towns bordering the Pine Barrens.
