I didn't used to think so but now that I've spent a year in therapy, I'm starting to realize that self talk does influence our mood and how we view ourselves. The more down I am on myself, the worse I feel. In fact I've found a way to silence my inner bully.(my self critic if you want.)
I named the negative voice in my head Prunella. Since then when I catch myself being harsh, I shout "Shut up, Prunella!" When nobody else is around.
It seems to help. That and I'm working on being forgiving and trying to not see things as a slight when someone does something that ruffles my feathers.
I'm not perfect but I have to be kind to myself and others.(except that thing I call Prunella.)
