No seatbelts, ever. If the car had them (and they usually did), they were unceremoniously shoved into the crack between the seat and the backrest...by our parents. Rode in the back of a pick up (it wasn't nearly as fun as it should have been). Rode a bicycle without a helmet. Pushed our bikes up a very steep (and roughly paved) backwoods Vermont road, then road it down. Hit sand and did a flip over the handlebars. Rented paddle boats by ourselves and paddled around a lake unsupervised and without life vests. Walked alone for miles along a country highway to get candy at the closest store. We never locked our house or car doors. Would that be enough samples? I doubt it is everything. We just did stuff differently back then. |
