Factual: because we do not pronounce them the way they were in the original language. For example, the "gn-" at the start of "gnome" has a glottal, back of the throat initial sound in the old European tongue. Sorry. Boring, I know. However... Reality: It is all down to a cabal of English teachers and lexicographers who are doing everything in their power to make English incomprehensible so they will always be in a job... |
