Many words/names of Greek origin were bastardized by the Romans (e.g., Zeus becoming Jupiter, his wife Hera becoming Juno, and Zeus's son (one of them) Herakles becoming Hercules).
As time progresses (I won't say flows), languages evolve, pronounciation alters, concepts are put by the wayside and new ones emerge.
Latin was mandatory for centuries (to those few who could afford schooling), but as attendance restrictions started falling, courses such as Latin became electives. If you study any branch of paleontology or current life science, you can't escape its quasi-accurate nomenclature; otherwise, it's a dying language.
Oh, and religion. The individual who translated the Latin bible into English (transferring the Language of God into heresy) was burned at the stake. Then, and only then, did the King declare the English version acceptable. Yes, you know which blble.
