Could be Michele SAGARA's Elantra, which is a well-written fantasy series. Could be Michio KAKU's various futures (Physics of the Future, which I'm sure will include FTL. Could be late 19th century India, with Jim CORBETT, a game ranger who specialized in hunting man-eating tigers and leopards. (Never, over the many years I've mentioned man-eating critters, has anyone called that sexist and demanded I say "person-eating".) Could be Russia. Name of the book is unimportant.
