In reality, DNA was first discovered by a Swiss chemist in 1860. We didn't know the structure of DNA until Crick Watson used X-ray crystallography to analyze fresh DNA samples.

Before that Gregor Mendel was the father of modern genetics. It was he who figured out how genes were expressed and inherited. He used pea plants as the first deliberate genetic experiment.
