I wouldn't change anything about the way I was raised. We were (and are) a close family and visited both sets of my grandparents and extended family often - family and family history is important to us. Holidays were time for gathering together and cousins were close friends of mine and my brother. My parents weren't satellite parents like you see a lot of today, but they were involved in almost every aspect of my growing up - while at the same time allowing us to make our own mistakes so we could learn life's lessons. Loving parents, hundreds of acres of land on which to roam, plenty of books and outside time, always had at least one animal in my life, and I was taught to be a responsible human being. Even getting spanked (usually with the horse reins but sometimes with whatever was closest to my mom) helped to shape me into the person I am today. Yeah, we had our problems, but what family doesn't? I wouldn't change one iota of how I was brought up. |
