Being progressive for the time, my parents tried to move away from spanking as punishment and toward removal of things that I enjoyed. I learned my lesson: Never admit to liking anything, because that will be used against me the next time I step out of line. I think I preferred the spankings. Those were over and done in a few days. To this day, I have to actively tell myself that it's okay to enjoy something. Honestly, though, I wouldn't change anything, because if something had been different, I wouldn't be the person I am now. But if I had to change something, it would be the "taking things away when I was bad" bit. (On the flip side, one time my punishment was no TV for a month and a half, and that turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me.) |
